Numerous floral tributes to Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe, the founder president of Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha, Kolhapur. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe   established the educational institution with the motto “ज्ञान, विज्ञान आणि सुसंस्कार यांसाठी शिक्षणप्रसार” that is “Education for knowledge, science and culture”. The memorial of Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe reminds the record of his efforts and sacrifices. It not only honours the past, but also inspires the future.

Vivekanand College, Kolhapur was established in 1964 in this scenic and sacred location. The fame and name of the college has been mushrooming for the last few decades. It is known as one of the star colleges in Maharashtra. The college is re-accredited twice with ‘A’ grade by NAAC, Bangalore with CGPA 3.12 in the second cycle and CGPA 3.24 in the third cycle. The college has been identified as the College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) twice by the UGC and is included in the star college scheme by the Dept. of Bio-technology, Govt. of India. The college has Ranked 58th in India in India Ranking 2017 conducted by NIRF, MHRD , Govt. of India.   The DST, Government of India sanctioned Rs. 70 Lacs under FIST programme to the college.

Around 8000 students enroll every year for the various programmes. Besides the conventional programmes like B.A., B.Com.and B.Sc., the college offers the professional programmes like B.B.A., B.C.A., B.C.S., B.Sc. (Biotechnology) and M. B. A. The college also provides the opportunity to undertake degrees like B.Lib.,M.Lib. and M.B.A. of YCMOU, Nashik. 

Apart from this, thirteen different types of Career Oriented Courses are run by the college. In the year 2014-15 the college has been granted B.Voc and Community College programmes in Foundry Technology and Graphic Design / Art by the UGC. The placement record is 100% for these courses.

The college has also acquired reputation in academic, co-curricular and extracurricular fields. It imprints its impressions in dance, drama, music, arts and sports. The college has been getting hold on the first place for last twelve years by winning maximum number of Shivaji University Merit Scholarships. Our students secure first place in the merit lists of different departments every year and win various prestigious awards and scholarships at university level including the Inspire Scholarship.

The college has won the ‘Meghnath Nageshkar Trophy’ of Shivaji University for the Best College in the field of sports for eleven years continuously. Our students, SandipTarate and Snehankita Varute are the recipients of the prestigious “Chhatrapati Shivaji Award”. Rahi Sarnobat is the winner of the World Shooting Championship held in Korea in March 2013. Rahi Sarnobat(shooting) and Veerdhaval Khade(swimming)  represented India in ‘London Olympics-2012’. Our student Krisnaraj Mahadik won first place in Formula III World Racing Competition held at London in August 2017. Sammed Shete is an international chess player. Till date the college has produced more than 200 national and 11 international sports persons.

The college has also proved its talent in the field of cultural activities by winning General Championship in the Central Youth Festival of Shivaji University for ten consecutive years. The cultural troupe of this college is frequently invited to perform on the television and radio. Our student Usha Jadhav, a film actress, is the winner of ‘The Best Actress National Award-2013’ for her performance in Marathi film ‘Dhag’. Presently, our three girl students are heroines in the five different Marathi films. Our ex-students Seva More (an actress),Santosh Shinde (winner of Zee Marathi Hasyasamrat and actor in ‘Natrang’), Onkar Karambelkar (Lokmat newspaper), Manish Apate (radio jockey and actor), Teja Bandal (international award winner in Origami)have attained honour in entertainment, business and journalism.

Apart from this, we have a remarkable placement record. Our Placement Cell is very active. During the last five years 549 students are placed in the various organizations like Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Patni Computers, Eton, Reliance Insurance, Federal Bank and South Indian Bank. We also provide guidance for different competitive examinations at our Guidance Centre. During the last five years, the centre has produced more than 100 officers.
 
NCC and NSS are significant assets of our college. The NSS department conducts social activities like blood donation, tree plantation, AIDS awareness rally, mountaineering, disaster management, awareness programmes on issues like open-defecation free villages and pollution free Ganesh-visarjan at Panchaganga ghat. Our NSS volunteer Vishal Solapure was the recipient of ‘Indira Gandhi National Social Service Award -2011’, and Soniya Shanediwan won Yuvak Bhushan Award in 2014-15 and Indira Gandhi Yuvak Award in 2015-16. Our NSS programme officer, Mr. H. P. Patil was honoured with ‘the Best Programme Officer Award’ for the year 2012-13 by Shivaji University.

Selection for the Republic Day Parade is the highest recognition for the NCC cadet. And 36 students of this college have received this honour till this date. 26 of our NCC cadets are presently working as commissioned officers in Armed Forces of India.

The college takes good care of students’ health. The Vivekanand Counseling and Health Center is actively engaged in this service. The MoU with the NGO Manspandan in 2017 will definitely prove fruitful for caring the students’ physical and mental health.

The Library is housed in 8000 sq. feet; two-storeyed building providing study centers to students and teachers. Our knowledge resource hub is well equipped with books, journals, e-books and reference CDs. There is free internet facility to students. Book Bank is also one of the innovative services of the library. Books for examinations like MHT-CET, IIT and MPSC are made available to the students. On an average 800 books are exchanged daily.

The faculty of Vivekanad College is highly qualified, devoted in teaching and active in research and innovative in social activities.  During the last 5 years, 24 major and minor research projects have been undertaken by our teachers. Nine faculty members are research guides for M.Phil. and Ph.D. Nearly 457 research articles have been published by the teachers in various National and International Journals with higher h- index. Dr. M. M. Karanjakar and his team of Physics Department have carried out the analysis of Kirnaotsav phenomenon and temperature and humidity control in the Mahalaxmi Temple. The research work of Dr. N.Y. Rajeshirke (Commerce) on KMT proves significant. The research of Dr. Kiran Shinde (zoology) on paddy crop confirms the   noteworthiness and the empirical research of Mr. S. G. Bhosale on urban boundary extension of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation have helped the community in a special way.

Thus, this is a college of outstanding excellence and remarkable achievements. Kolhapur is known as the city of jaggery, Kolhapuri Saaj, famous Lavangi Mirchi, tambada and pandhara rassa, famous kolhapuri chappals and as the city of wrestlers. Today it is also known as the City of Vivekanand College.
